Well, this time it’s the SNES connectors that are causing some delay. What happened is that I basically told my supplier how urgently I need them, and before Nov 13, if possible. What they understood was that if they would not be able to deliver before Nov 13, the connectors would be worthless to me anyway, so they ended up not sending me anything at all. Shit happens when experts (them) have to communicate with amateurs (me). Meanwhile, I hacked my own solution by sawing apart SEGA connectors, of which I have plenty. Which gives us (tadaa) the first ever fully assembled Retrode prototype! It’s based on the final hardware, and sure enough, both SEGA and SNES slots are working fine, so I can now give the green light for PCB mass production.
As for the case, you will notice that the shiny cutouts tend to look a bit weird against the black surfaces. Initially, I had planned to have the machining done first and the anodization after, but now it happens to be the other way around. For a less suspicious look, the final version will be yellow, which should minimize the apparent contrast at the edges.

I actually think the black case looks good; reminds me of my old Sega Genesis. Oh well, a retro miracle is a retro miracle no matter what color case it comes in. Hopefully my Earthbound SNES game cartridge will work with it. It would be one small step for the Starmen (Earthbound/Mother fans), and one giant slap in the face for Nintendo of America (who seem way too reluctant to give it another chance).
Looks really cool, looking forward to playing with one.
@Luke — he already ordered the cases so its probably too late to change anyways.
either way i am sure people will repaint it themselves anyways if they dont like it.
you can do a lot with ‘Krylon’
I would be fine with one that looks like that (black). Are you sure you want to go with yellow without letting us even see a picture first?
Rest assured, it is just as exciting for myself as it is for you :-) When it comes to looking at the final cases, I will be 5 minutes ahead of you.
I would have gone for deep red or black (which was my own preference to begin with, as well as the poll outcome). But after some experiments with the samples, I know that bright colors WILL look better than dark ones, given that the processing order had to be changed to anodization first, machining after. Now let’s hope we get the meanest, most violent yellow the world has ever seen :)
:)
looks great. anxiously awaiting mine!
