You may remember that naming contest where I couldn’t quite make up my mind and ended up sticking to the old name. Well, with a little delay, I finally decided to rename the project after all. Back then, [Fydo] had come up with a couple of particularly nice suggestions, among them “Retrode” which has kept on haunting me ever since. I took the liberty of adding a colon for that extra bit of graphical hipness, so Re:trode it is from now on. Here are some reasons why I like this one a lot:
- It’s short.
- It’s catchy.
- It’s pronounceable.
- It kind of makes sense. This device is some sort of an “electrode” to connect to “retro” stuff. Plus, as [JesseV] points out, we’re all gonna be retro’d by it. Hence: Retrode.
- It looks daaaaamn good next to that logo. See:
(That’s right: I even went and bought fonts of matching stroke width :))
Being the lazy guy I am, I used the “find-and-replace” hammer on all previous posts, which will cause severe temporal paradoxa, so it’s more than likely that we’re all going to be trapped in a time loop with no escape. You will know when you’re in there. By the way, of course [Fydo] will get his very own Retrode, after all he’s another winner of the contest. Thanks again, [Fydo] – awesome job!
I agree, snega does lead more to what the device was meant for, but Retrode just sounds so damn badass.

Snega was a bit catchier name in my opinion, but it is still a miracle for Earthbound fans who do not live in Japan and know Japanese. The new name does not change that.
I liked snega2usb better than retrode.

Hmm, now I have another question: Is it meant to be pronounced “REE – trode” or “RETT – trode”? Because the two different type weights make it look like the former.
Your choice, though I personally prefer RETT-rode as in “retro”. IMO, the English hyphenation ret-ro is misleading and does not reflect the etymology of the prefix re-tro. Strangely enough, I see that the correct hyphenation for “intro” is in fact in-tro. Ah well. Whatever.
Think of it as “retro’d” quite simple really.
Something accored to me if you cut the words
retro and electrode like so: re/tro elec/trode
and if you swap the second halves you get retrode and electro,
so now we can have hot beats with our emulation!
Hmm, maybe I just don’t like change, but I think I liked the old Snega2usb better. Sure it was slightly hard to pronounce, but it seemed to better represent what the product did, convert Sega and SNES carts to a USB mass storage mode. Certainly Retrode does explain what the device is, but the name could also belong to any number of other devices doing any number of things. Actually, when I hear Retrode the first thing that comes to mind is a Undead troll like thing that belongs in a fantasy game, :). Anyway, I’m sure it will grow on me and in any case, no matter what name you call it in the end, this device will be awesome and thanks for all the hard work.

I agree with Lanny. The name is great and removing the colon is a better long term decision.

I love it, much better than the old name I was like “Snegga” or “SNAY-gah” I just couldn’t get it, but this I looked and went hmm re: trode whats that mean… but then it came to me. Re:trode = Retro’d = electrode + retro.
