Retrode Prototype

Retrode Golden Edition

This web site is dedicated to my USB adapter for 16-bit games, the Retrode (was: snega2usb). Feed your SNES or Mega Drive / Genesis emulator with games from your original cartridges! The project started as a little proof of concept for myself, but eventually turned out way larger than that. Here are some links to the most important bits of information:

Online store opens

What a moment. Finally I’ve got plenty of Retrodes in stock (and plenty of other stuff that’s either useful or fancy). Let’s see how long my supplies last :-)

Please, follow me. To the online store…

User stories

There goes the first flush of brand new Retrodes, and back comes a lot of joy. The first thing I’d do when unpacking my Retrode is probably to try it “as is”, but others had controller adapters prepared before they even received the device. Thanks for reminding me that my own controller solution was long overdue. And there’s a lot more to come. I know of some folks who plan to integrate their Retrode into larger console projects, and I am especially eager to hear about those. Anyway, you’ll probably agree that this deserves its own category, so here it is: User stories. If you want your project to be featured here, just drop us a line to userstories@retrode.org. Myself and a select bunch of guest editors will go through the submissions from time to time and condense them into this blog.

By the way, the online store will open sometime next week. See you there!

'Tis done.

Et voilà, here we have lots of shiny golden Retrodes for the preorderers. I will ship them this week, just in time so you can try your brand new Retrode with your brand new Pandora :-) For all others, I have to ask you for a little more patience. Next week I will be out of town, so regular ordering will not start before Feb 22.

Update (Feb 11): SHIP SHIP HOORAY! All you lucky folks out there, make some noise once you get yours! Write to userstories@retrode.org

Christmas, yet again?

100 PCBs

Here we see a box of production Retrode mainboards that I just set up and tested. Funny how the green circuit boards and the pink bubble wrap add to the christmasy mood of this shot ;-) According to the person who did the CNC machining, the cases should be delivered on Thursday or Friday, if the weather permits. Preordered Retrodes would then be shipped early next week. If you didn’t preorder but are still interested, check back regularly (or subscribe to the newsletter) for the new online store.

Need I say more?

Thanks to Kevin Horton for his excellent bank switching doc.

We've got Contra

Contra checksum test okay

After fixing a memory mapping issue which affected Contra III and Krusty’s Super Fun House, we’re back at a reported 100.00% compatibility for SNES games! (opens a bottle of beer) On that occasion, I also fixed the wrong ROM size detection on Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Meanwhile, [JonY] pointed out a firmware bug, so the config file function will have to go through a major rewrite. Hope to get it done by the end of today. needed some hefty rewriting, but now works better than ever (including the possibility to revert individual parameters to factory default). Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pick up some Atari adapters :D

Adapter for 2600

2600 adapters

Setting out for new adventures: I am currently looking into building an adapter for *Atari 2600 games. Here is a fabrication shot of a couple prototype PCBs which I should receive later this week. If this works, it might be a cheap way to open the Retrode for other systems.
